Project Description

Welcome to Vaultium, an abandonware gaming repository powered by Filecoin & IPFS, a dedicated project aimed at preserving and providing access to classic, abandoned video games that are no longer available through commercial means. This repository ensures the longevity, accessibility, and decentralized distribution of these nostalgic pieces of digital history.

How it's Made

Vaultium is built using a combination of technologies that help us achieve our objective. First we have a Solidity contract (that we deployed both in Filecoin Calibration and Ethereum Sepolia, though we are using the former for our "production" environment as we require The Graph at the moment) that handles the storage of the basic game details (name, year, publisher, etc.), and the possibility to "challenge" game versions, that is: proposing to upload a new - first or not - version of the game, and by letting the community vote which is the proper version that should be highlighted for download. By using The Graph we index the event of a new game added to the Dapp (even if it does still not have a game version uploaded), enabling users to search available games, and then we use Filecoin & IPFS through Lighthouse to make it easier for people & us to publish/sponsor publication of games and make sure they will stay available forever. We also added Privy in order to enable for an account-abstracted experience (though we essentially tested the project using our wallets) and make it easier for web2 users to contribute.

We would like to mention too that we worked pretty hard on making a nice UI with pretty beautiful details that everyone will enjoy!

Also, we used Fleek to deploy our website, as we think having it available via IPFS contributes to our mission of preserving abandonware games.

We worked hard to try implement AI within the contract to be able to verify that a game is actually abandonware and make it easier to fill the information (our idea was not only helping complete the required information to upload a game, but also to help people find games they only remember a description & discover new gems they might like), unfortunately it has not been possible to do so at the moment (although we think it would be a great addition)

Finally, we think that is worth mentioning that our motivation is not only to help preserving abandonware games, but proving that the fancy new technologies that are being developed at the moment in the ecosystem can be used to create value for the average non tech-savvy user, and that is possible to create easy to use experiences for everyone!
